4th Annual Housekeeping Olympics

September 12th, 2011 marks the beginning of International Housekeeping Week, a week dedicated to the professionals who maintain the cleanliness and safety of hotels every day.

Four years ago, B. F. Saul Company and WashDCHotels started the Housekeeping Olympics to recognize its team members’ hard work and provide a friendly competition amongst hotels in the Washington, D.C. area.

This year, the Crowne Plaza Tysons Corner hotel is proud to host the fourth annual Housekeeping Olympics on September 16, 2011 at 1:30 PM. Fourteen hotels in the DC metropolitan area will compete for the trophy.

The Housekeeping Olympics includes both individual and team events that measure skill and timeliness. Points, as well as gold, silver, and bronze medals, will be awarded at each event and the hotel team with the most points will receive the Hotel Division Trophy. This year’s events are:
  • Toilet Bowl Basketball – Each contestant will attempt to toss as many rolls of toilet paper into a toilet bowl 20 feet away in 60 seconds.
  • Obstacle Course Relay – In this three-part team event, there will be speed towel folding, chocolate tossing on to a bed pillow, and a soap shoot-out in to waste baskets.
  • General Manager Bed Making Race – The Olympics finale is the General Managers bed making race. The GMs from B. F. Saul and WashDCHotels will race to make a bed to hotel standards in three minutes.
The SpringHill Suites by Marriott Dulles Airport hotel hopes to defend its title as the 2010 Housekeeping Olympics Champions. The hotel’s General Manager, Heather Hull, states, “Our housekeeping are very proud of last year's victory and are looking to repeat.”

It’s no coincidence that the SpringHill Suites Dulles was recently named one of top hotels in the SpringHill brand at Marriott’s GM conference earlier this year. In addition, Heather Hull was named General Manager of the year!
